ABOUT AKA

AKA Sound System was first dreamed about 5 years ago at a squat party in London. We were tired of hearing the same music being played on different sound systems week in and week out. We wanted to play the music we loved and we wanted to play it loud!! We wanted to play HARD TEKNO - the music heard throughout Europe.

After having our first 10K designed and built by Tim and Ray of "NOISE CONTROL" and Steve Bedlam in England, we sat and stared at them in our lounge room in Angel for 6 months until we could afford amps, compressors, crossovers and lighting before we could do a party. Once that happened we were ready to do free parties on the London Underground scene - and never looked back!!

Free parties have been going on in England and Europe for many many years. In London alone there are more than four different parties going on in one night. Information is posted on a telephone line on Saturday night and from there the choice is yours. There is often high risk of parties being shut down, but the vibe is there and they happen nevertheless.

A free party is not about free money. It takes a lot of time, effort, ingenuity and of course money to run a sound system and a free party. A free party is about your freedom - your choice to do as you choose - be who you want to be. Its about being part of something exceptional, no bullshit, no attitudes. No "famous" DJ's because they are not promoted as such, but wicked underground DJ's who play because they want and because they love the music (sometimes different!) - and not cos they're being paid.

Mobile sound systems don't run on air or people's smiles alone. This is why a small donation is appreciated as a token of respect - and also to keep the party running. Its all about opening your minds and changing the status quo.

After a couple of years going off in London, AKA decided it was time to move on. We wanted sun, a chilled out environment and of course lots more parties in a place that was "up for it" - Our choice was Australia. We heard there was a need for an underground scene and that people needed a choice. In September 2001 we loaded up a 40ft container full of sound equipment and shipped it across the world from London to Melbourme (very stressing time!!). It took us three years of hard work to get our sound system here - but we made it!!

In Melbourne we want to create a similar sort of vibe. Open people's mind and show you as those people that there is a different and more interesting way to party! We are a free party sound system - we believe in free parties for free people. Our aim is to bring together live music, performance, lights and visuals to create a soundscape that anyone and everyone can enjoy and be a part of.
